Scripture : Matthew 5:1-12
New International Version (NIV)

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,  for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5 lists the beatitudes Jesus taught from the mountainside. They have also been called the “Be –Attitudes”.

What is attitude? Here’s the dictionary definition.

- “manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind:

- “position or posture of the body appropriate to or expressive of an action, emotion, etc.”

There really is only one attitude mentioned here in Jesus’ teaching. It says, “Blessed (or Happy) are the ones who do the following...” Then Jesus teaches 8 ways this that blessing is achieved. The happiness is connected to the result that follows each action.

“Be happy and blessed when you show mercy, because you know God will give you mercy in return.”

“Be happy and blessed when you live as a peacemaker, because it shows you are really a child of God.”

“Be happy and blessed when you are persecuted or insulted because of Christ, because you will receive a reward in heaven.”

“Be happy and blessed if you have a strong desire for God, because God will fill you.”

These are just four of the BE-attitudes listed. Jesus’ point is this: real blessing and happiness exists because of our attitudes. What we believe and act on is much more important than what happens to us.

Faith in what God says will happen is the best motivation for action. “Be” what God says to be, and He will do what He says. He will bless you!
